As a practicing trial attorney with degrees from the University of Kansas and William and Mary, my path to tutoring has been somewhat unique. I started by tutoring my own children and was then asked by colleagues to help their children to prepare for tests like the ACT, SAT, and LSAT. I enjoyed the experience of tutoring so much that I then reached out and began taking on other students.One benefit of having a lawyer as a tutor is my teaching style. My job is to persuade - when working with a jury, I have to educate them on the facts of the case and do it in such a way as to ensure they do not lose focus or interest. This is the approach I bring to my tutoring sessions, and I find that it helps students stay invested in the subject matter.I have found this approach to be effective across disciplines. Math, Astronomy, Chemistry, Physics, Social Studies, History, Reading, Writing, Grammar, Economics, and even Computer Science - all of these subjects respond to a knowledgeable approach and an engaging presentation.I've continued tutoring because, much like my hobbies of model rocketry and computers, it keeps me in touch with both important knowledge and also with the cutting-edge ideas that young adults bring to that knowledge.
